The Suffren-class SSNs for the French Navy will replace the existing Rubis-class and Amethyste-class SSNs and provide France with a new sub-surface attack capability with enhanced sensors and weapons. However, the programme has experienced signiﬁcant delays relating to the development of a new nuclear reactor. The ﬁrst boat was commissioned in November 2020. The ﬁrst four vessels are expected to be commissioned by 2025 and all six by 2030. The unit cost is now thought to be in excess of $2 billion each.Читати далі

The UK RN’s Astute-class SSN programme is still only halfway to completion and has suffered signiﬁcant cost increases and delays. However, the boats offer a signiﬁcant capability increase over the earlier Trafalgar-class and Swiftsur e-class SSNs. A contract was awarded in 1997, but the ﬁrst boat did not enter service until 2010. Five have been commissioned, with the last two to be delivered before 2026. Norway is to get four new Type 212CD ‘common design’ submarines to replace the existing Ula-class SSKs after it selected German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems as its strategic partner. In addition, even the German Navy has ordered two Type 212CDs that will integrate its existing ﬂeet of Type 212. The Type 212CD is a variant of the German-designed Type 212 submarine. Spain’s S-80A or Isaac Peral-class SSKs are being built to replace the Spanish Navy’s existing Agosta 90B-class SSKs that were designed in the 1970s and built in the mid-1980s. However, despite construction starting in 2007, the original S-80 programme has suffered considerable delays, and none of the S-80s has entered service. Developed by Spanish company Navantia, the ﬁrst submarine construction was suspended in 2013 while signiﬁcant design changes were made. The Taigei class (29SS) is a new class of attack submarines under construction for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
