It was widely adopted for lever- and bolt-action rifles throughout the Western hemisphere, for both sporting and law enforcement use and retains its popularity today as a small to medium game cartridge. The performance has been improved over the years, but it remains essentially a short-range round, particularly recommended in the USA for deer hunting. Rifles chambered in this calibre are still widely used by US law enforcement, especially in rural areas.
