The Type 209/1400mod is a modified variant of the German-designed export Type 209/1400 submarine. This variant of the Type 209 is in service with the South African Navy and was built by Howaldtswerke and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). The Egyptian Navy is also receiving four new Type 209/1400 SSK from German shipbuilder TKMS that are currently in production and will significantly enhance its subsurface capability over the existing four Romeo-class SSKs, which were built to a modified Chinese
design.
