Norway is to get four new Type 212CD ‘common design’ submarines to replace the existing Ula-class SSKs after it selected German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems as its strategic partner. In addition, even the German Navy has ordered two Type 212CDs that will integrate its existing fleet of Type 212. The Type 212CD is a variant of the German-designed Type 212 submarine. The Royal Norwegian Navy will keep the Ula-class in service beyond 2020 to ensure a transition of submarine capability from one class to the
other.
