Brazil’s new Riachuelo-class SSKs are designed to replace the Brazilian Navy’s (BN’s) ageing 1980s-vintage Tupi/Tikuna-class SSKs. This will occur under the PROSUB-SBr programme, which will also give the BN a new submarine construction facility and naval base in cooperation with the French shipbuilder Naval Group. All four SSKs are expected to be in service by 2025, having been customised for BN operations with an anti-surface, anti-subma-rine, intelligence and special operations
capability.
