The Antártica-I Polar-class Icebreaker is currently under construction at Astilleros y Maestranzas de la Armada’s (ASMAR’s) facility in Talcahuano. The icebreaker is intended to carry out missions such as SAR, troop transportation, medical support, scientific research and data gathering in the Antarctic zone. The new vessel will replace the Almirante Viel, which was decommissioned in 2019. A $216 million contract was announced in 2017, and the icebreaker is expected to join the Chilean Navy fleet in
