The Aquitaine-class frigates for the French Navy are based on the Franco-Italian, European, multipurpose frigate design FREMM (European multi-mission Frigate/Fregata europea multi-missione). For France, the ships are replacing the ageing Cassard- and Georges Legyues-class frigates and are built in two variants: ASW and anti-air warfare.
