The three Hobart-class air warfare destroyers are being brought into service with the Royal Australian Navy under the SEA 4000 procurement programme. They will fill a fleet air defence capability gap that has existed since the retiring of its three Perth-class destroyers in 2001. The programme has experienced considerable delays, with the first ship in class delivered in September 2017 and the final ship commissioned in May
2020.
