To meet its requirement for a new amphibious ship, the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) selected the Dokdo design from Hanjin Heavy Industries. The first 14,500t ship was commissioned in 2007. Although more were planned, delays meant that a second ship, Marado, was only launched in 2018 and will not be commissioned until 2020. The ships represent the first steps in the ROKN becoming a real blue-water navy with an amphibious
capability.
