Under its Sotnik soldier modernisation programme, the Russian Army plans to introduce the new 6S20 Smes rocket launcher into service with infantry units by 2023. The Smes consists of a disposable launcher and a reusable sight incorporating day and night sights as well as a laser rangefinder. It will be compatible with two types of 72.5mm projectiles: a tandem HEAT warhead for engaging armoured targets and a thermobaric warhead for use against structures. State testing with the Smes is scheduled to commence in
autumn 2021.
