In April 2006, BAE Systems was selected by the USN for the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II project. This was to provide a semi-active laser guidance and control system for attachment to Hydra-70 rockets in the US inventory. Due to its mid-body, power-up-after-launch design, APKWS II can be modified from any existing 70mm rocket and fired from current and future launchers with no aircraft modifications. Arnold Defense has also developed a ground-launched version of the APKWS for ground-to-ground
precision strike missions. By the end of 2019, BAE Systems had delivered more than 35,000 APKWS.
