SPEAR 3, formally known as the Selective Precision Effects At Range Capability 3, is an MBDA missile being developed for the UK Ministry of Defence under a 2016 contract to arm the Royal Air Force's F-35B Lightning II. The weapon belongs to the same family as the Brimstone missile currently in RAF service but is designed for a longer range and greater destructive effect. SPEAR 3's network-enabled architecture allows it to receive target updates in flight, supporting engagement of time-sensitive and re-locatable
targets in contested airspace where the launch aircraft must remain at extended standoff distance.
