Based on the Il-76 transport, the Il-78 convertible tanker/transport aircraft first entered service in 1974 and was followed three years later by the improved Il-78M dedicated tanker. More than 30 of the 53 Il-78s produced in various models since 1983 are in service with the air forces of Algeria (three), China (three Il-78MP), India (seven Il-78MKI), Libya (one), Pakistan (three Il-78MP), Russia (19, 31 on order). Ukraine inherited a fleet of aircraft after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, but most of these
have been converted to transport aircraft, retired or resold.
