The Kawasaki P-1 is an MPA designed from the ground up to replace the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s (JMSDF’s) ageing P-3 Orion fleet. Optimised for long-range and long-endurance missions, the P-1 is intended for use in several roles, including wide-area patrols, maritime surveillance, mine-laying, SAR and assisting disaster relief operations. Despite incurring significant delays due to structural problems with the fuselage, the aircraft entered service with the JMSDF in March 2013 and has since been offered to
several foreign customers.
