The Kodiak Armoured Engineer Vehicle (AEV) 3, based on the Leopard 2 MBT chassis, was developed by Rheinmetall in collaboration with RUAG Land Systems. The Swiss Army was the launch customer with a $117 million order for 12 Kodiaks in 2007. The Netherlands and Sweden placed a joint order, worth €100 million ($111 million), in January 2008 for ten vehicles for the Netherlands and six for Sweden. Deliveries to Switzerland began in 2009, with deliveries to the Netherlands and Sweden commencing in
2011.
