The BMP-3 was designed as a successor to the BMP-1 and BMP-2 IFVs, entering service with the Soviet Red Army in 1987. Armed with a 100mm 2A70 main gun, as well as a coaxial 30mm 2A72 cannon and 7.62mm PKT machine gun in its turret, it is capable of carrying up to seven dismounts in addition to its three-person crew. In total, more than 2,000 BMP-3s have been produced, mostly at the Kurganmashzavod
plant.
