The 120mm-armed Arjun MBT was developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to meet the requirements of the Indian Army. Although development began in 1972, it was not until 2004 that the first of 124 Arjuns ordered in 2000 was delivered. A contract for the production of an improved variant, the Arjun Mk IA, was announced by the Indian government in September 2021. This was expected to act as an interim to the Arjun Mk II, but there are indications that the Mk II may no longer be
required.
