Hyundai Rotem has developed the K2 ‘Black Panther’ MBT since 1993 to meet the requirements of the Republic of Korea Army. A total of 600 are expected to be ordered in several batches to replace legacy M48 tanks. Equipped with a locally developed 120mm/55 cal smoothbore gun and an automatic loader, the K2 is manned by a crew of three. Deliveries of the first batch of 100 tanks began in 2014, but problems with developing an indigenous engine and transmission have delayed delivery of the second
batch.
