The 125mm-armed Al-Zarrar MBT is a modernised version of the Pakistan Army’s Norinco 100mm-armed Type 59 which was based on the Soviet T-54A. In 1990, the army decided it could not afford to replaced its approximately 1,100 Type 59s and HIT was directed to launch an upgrade project. The first of 320 Al-Zarrars was delivered to the army in 2004. Despite negotiations to upgrade Bangladesh’s fleet of T-59s, there had been no export sales of the Al-Zarrar by early
2018.
