In 1992, the US Army selected the M8 to meet its requirement for an air-transportable Armored Gun System, but the programme was cancelled for budgetary reasons in 1996. However, BAE Systems resurrected the M8 design in 2015 for the US Army’s Mobile Protected Firepower programme. This new unnamed platform features several changes to enhance the M8’s survivability and tactical mobility but retains its predecessor’s ability to fit within a C-130 transport
aircraft.
