The 4x4 Fennek was developed in the 1990s to meet the needs of the German Army and the Royal Netherlands Army for a light armoured reconnaissance vehicle. Since 2001, more than 660 Fenneks have been built for Germany, the Netherlands and most recently Qatar. Krauss-Maffei Wegmann markets eight Fennek variants based on those developed for the two primary customers: reconnaissance; C2; medium-range antitank; forward artillery observer; joint fire support team (JFST); pioneer reconnaissance; Stinger weapon platform
(SWP); and Fennek tactical air control party.
