The Mobile Detection, Assessment and Response System (MDARS) provides commanders with a robotic capability for conducting semi-autonomous random patrols and surveillance activities. Development of the platform began in 1993, with demonstrations in October 1996 and September 1997. It began as an effort to develop a platform to patrol within assigned areas of warehouses and storage sites on military establishments. The design of the platform was expanded to create a large wheeled platform that could conduct outdoor
perimeter patrols.
