Skydweller is a MALE developmental UAV. Manufacturers Skydweller Aero plan to remove the crewed features from a Solar Impulse 2 aircraft and replace them with an autonomous AI flight system. The weight this will save, combined with the platform’s 2,900ft² of photovoltaic cells that will gather solar energy during a flight, will theoretically give the UAV unlimited endurance and range. These performance specifications mean the Skydweller will offer persistent surveillance of a given area with its ISR payloads.
Possible uses include land and sea surveillance, environmental and infrastructure monitoring, geo-information services, telecommunications and precision navigation, the provision of communications to support operators in emergencies.
