Russia’s new Yasen-class (Project 885) SSNs are the culmination of almost 40 years of work as the design effort took place in the late 1970s and early 1980s with plans to introduce the boats from the 1990s. Financial problems caused significant delays, but the first boat eventually entered service in 2013. A total of eight Project 885M SSNs are planned to follow the first Project 885
