The Suffren-class SSNs for the French Navy will replace the existing Rubis-class and Amethyste-class SSNs and provide France with a new sub-surface attack capability with enhanced sensors and weapons. However, the programme has experienced significant delays relating to the development of a new nuclear reactor. The first boat was commissioned in November 2020. The first four vessels are expected to be commissioned by 2025 and all six by 2030. The unit cost is now thought to be in excess of $2 billion
each.
