The Taigei class (29SS) is a new class of attack submarines under construction for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The class follows the Soryu- class submarines and is equipped with lithium-ion batteries. The submarines are being built by Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. So far, the first vessel has been commissioned in March 2022, and the second one is set to be delivered in
2023.
