The Republic of Korean Navy’s KSS-III submarines, formerly named Jangbogo III-class, are the latest variant of SSKs entering service under South Korea’s three-stage KSS attack submarine programme. The KSS-III variants are built to a design by shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME), whereas the earlier stage Son Won-Il (KSS-II) and Chang Bogo-class (KSS-I) SSKs were built to Germany’s Type 209/1400 and Type 214 designs respectively. Five have been ordered by 2021, four are being built by DSME
and one by HHI.
