Attack Class (Project Sea 1000)

Category
Marine
Australia’s SEA 1000 Attack-class future submarine programme was planned to introduce a class of 12 new SSKs built in Australia to replace the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN’s) existing fleet of six Collins-class submarines and expand its sub-surface capability. It was intended as one of the largest and most ambitious defence procurement projects ever undertaken in Australia and posed a significant amount of risk. In September 2021, Australia cancelled the programme for 12 new SSKs and instead is to begin a new
programme for at least eight new SSNs with the support of the US and the UK under the trilateral ‘next-generation partnership’ AUKUS security pact.
