Category

The Russian Federation Navy’s Borei-class (Project 955) (NATO: Dolgorukiy Class) SSBNs provide the sea-based element of Russia’s nuclear deterrent alongside its Delta-class and Typhoon-class submarines. The Borei class are fitted with a new submarine-launched ballistic missile called the Bulava and, despite a troubled development, are now entering service. The Russian Navy planned for 11 Borei-class submarines; however, only ten have been confirmed on order, and a further two taking the class to 12 are currently
being considered. Three so far have been commissioned, with the first entering service in 2013.
