The Canadian government announced on 2 June 2013 the selection of the Berlin Class (see separate entry) design, proposed by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems Canada, to meet the Royal Canadian Navy’s requirement for two Joint Support Ships (JSS), with an option for a third, will replace its two Protecteur- class auxiliary oiler replenishments. The procurement phase of the JSS project is valued at CAD$2.3 billion ($1.8 billion). The new Protecteur Class are being built by Canadian company Seaspan with the first vessels
due to be delivered in 2022/23.
