The Kunigami class are large patrol vessels constructed for and operated by the Japanese Coast Guard. The class was designed for stability at low speeds, making it ideal for SAR missions. Its primary goal is patrolling and securing the waters surrounding the Senkaku Islands. 20 vessels were delivered between 2012 and 2020. The vessels have been built by three different companies: Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, Japan Marine United Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
(MHI).
