The Viana do Castelo class currently consists of four OPVs in service with the Portuguese Navy. The vessels entered service between 2011 and 2019, while the Portuguese Navy are to receive a further six OPVs over the upcoming years following an announcement in 2019. The acquisition was approved in May 2021. The ships are replacing the ageing João Coutinho-class and Baptista de Andrade-class corvettes. The vessels are referred to by the Navy as Navio Patrulha Oceânica and are primarily used for maritime patrol and
surveillance.
