A new project began in 2015 for the Armed Forces of Malta to acquire a new OPV. The OPV named P71 will complement the existing P61 OPV but will have more endurance, better sea keeping and provide better living conditions for crews. A contract for the first vessel was awarded to Cantiere Navale Vittoria in 2018. Up to two P71 OPVs could be built, the first of which was launched in February
