The OPV80 was developed for the requirements of the Chilean Navy by the German company Fassmer GmbH & Co KG. The design was also promoted by Chile as a common platform for South American navies. Seven vessels have been built for both the Chilean and Colombian Navy, while the design was also considered by Argentina. The vessels are suited for operations in Exclusive Zone Patrol, counter-drug missions, maritime interdiction and SAR operations. They can also operate in light ice
conditions.
