The USN’s LPD 17 San Antonio-class LPDs are being built to replace up to 41 older ships across four classes. These include the LPD 4 Austin-class, LST 1179 Newport-class tank landing ships, LSD 36 Anchorage-class and LKA 113 Charleston-class amphibious cargo transports. 11 are currently in service, with two more under construction. The second flight of 13 ships is planned to follow that will replace the LSD 41/49 Whidbey Island class. The class will consist of 26 ships: 13 Flight I’s and 13 Flight
II’s.
