The USN has selected Fincantieri Marinette Marine to build up to ten frigates under the FFG(X) next-generation future guided-missile frigate programme. The new Constellation class will replace the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates, which saw the last retired in 2015. The USN has a lack of small, inexpensive ocean-going ships for low-end missions since the littoral combat ship failed to materialise as planned.
