Freedom Class (LCS)

Region
United States

The USN’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) programme was originally envisaged at 50 ships, which would provide a coastal platform that would take over from the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates. The ships were supposed to be small, fast and modular, enabling them to take on a variety of roles with the exchange of a modular equipment package and specialist crews. Massive cost increases and delays and the failure of the ships to meet expectation has meant that the class has been curtailed and the USN is progressing with
the FFG(X) future frigate programme instead.
