The Bergamini-class frigates for the Italian Navy are based on the Franco-Italian, European, multipurpose frigate design FREMM (European multi-mission Frigate/Fregata europea multi-missione). For Italy, the ships are replacing the ageing Lupo- and Maestrale-class frigates and are built in two variants: ASW and general-purpose. The Italian design has been selected by the USN to compete for its next-generation frigate (FFX) programme. Ten frigates have been ordered by Italy, with eight already in service. Two have
been delivered to Eygpt and a further six have been ordered by Indonesia in 2021.
