Malaysia’s Maharaja Lela-class frigates represent a major step forward for the Royal Malaysian Navy as it progresses towards the indigenous construction of ever more complex surface warships. The class, of an expected six ships, was previously known as the Second Generation Patrol Vessel (SGPV) and Littoral Combat Ship programme. It will follow on from the Leiku-class frigates after the second batch of those vessels was cancelled. The ships are based on Naval Group’s Gowind 2500 corvette design but are a larger,

more stealthy variant.
