Following Australia’s intervention in East Timor in the early 2000s under the UN, it was realised that the Royal Australian Navy was severely lacking an amphibious capability that prevented it from rapidly deploying even a small force nearby in the Asian region. Therefore, two new LHD ships were procured to fill this gap that became the Canberra class. Built by BAE Systems Australia and Navantia, the ships entered service in 2014 and 2015

respectively.
