With the introduction of Liaoning, the PLAN has built its own carrier for the first time, designated the Type 002 at its commissioning ceremony and called Shandong. The Type 002 is based on the Type 001 Liaoning and started construction in 2013 at Dalian. The ship was launched in 2017 and started sea trials in May 2018. The expectation was that it would be commissioned in 2020, but the vessel was instead commissioned in December
2019.
