Following the first indigenously built aircraft carrier, the Type 002, the PLAN embarked on an even more ambitious programme for a larger aircraft carrier known as the Type 003. The new aircraft carrier, named Fujian, features Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) catapults and displaces around 80,000t. The vessel began construction in 2017 and was launched in June 2022. The PLAN is expected to follow this with a fourth aircraft carrier, referred to as the Type
004.
