Since entering US military service in 1968, the M203 40mm underbarrel grenade launcher has become the most widely deployed weapon of its type, fielded by the armed forces of nearly 50 countries. The launcher is produced across North America by Colt Defense, Colt Canada, Knight's Armament and Lewis Machine & Tool Company, as well as by international manufacturers. The M203 attaches beneath the barrel of M16- and M4-family rifles, giving infantry soldiers an organic indirect fire capability without the need for a
dedicated grenadier. Its single-shot break-open design accepts the full range of 40x46mm low-velocity ammunition including high-explosive, smoke, illumination, and less-lethal rounds.
