Norinco developed the CS/LM6 heavy machine gun to give export customers a cost-competitive 12.7x99mm alternative to M2-series weapons produced by Western manufacturers. The weapon is chambered for the standard .50 BMG cartridge, ensuring compatibility with existing NATO-standard ammunition stocks. The CS/LM6 tripod mounting can be reconfigured for the air defence role, allowing the weapon to engage low-flying aircraft and helicopters in addition to its primary ground fire

mission.
