Since June 2014, the US Army has awarded contracts totalling $7.7 million to Textron Systems to develop a 7.62mm version of the 5.56mm light machine gun (LMG) and its associated polymer-cased telescoped (CT) ammunition developed through the US Army’s Lightweight Small Arms Technology (LSAT) effort, which is now managed by the US Joint Service Small Arms Program. According to Textron, the 5.56mm CT LMG displayed improved short-range engagement times, more first-round hits at long range and increased accuracy due to

recoil mitigation. A prototype 7.62mm CT MMG was shown at SOFIC 2015. The 7.62mm CT weapon and a standard combat load of 800 rounds weighs 37% less than the 7.62mm M240L – 6.57kg for the CT weapon and 13.97kg for the ammunition. Textron planned to have a firing prototype ready by Q3 2016.
