In 2013, Rheinmetall introduced the Combat Performance Upgrade (KWS) package to modernise the 7.62mm MG3 general-purpose machine gun for continued infantry service. The MG3 itself is an evolution of the wartime MG42, which entered German service in 1968 and has since been exported directly or produced under licence by numerous armed forces worldwide. The KWS upgrade improves safety, ergonomics, and operational versatility, extending the service life of the MG3 without requiring a complete platform replacement and
