Heckler & Koch began development of the 7.62mm MG5 in 2005 — originally designated HK121 — in response to a German Armed Forces requirement to replace the ageing MG3 medium machine gun. The MG5 is a gas-operated, belt-fed design built around a modular architecture that allows rapid reconfiguration between infantry, vehicle-mounted, and fixed-installation roles. Chambered for 7.62x51mm NATO, the MG5 offers improved ergonomics and mounting flexibility compared to its predecessor, and has been adopted by the
Bundeswehr as the primary replacement for the MG3 in infantry and vehicle applications.
