Barrett designed the M240 Lightweight (LW) General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) with the aim of creating a firearm that is not only lighter than the conventional 7.62mm M240 but also more cost-effective to manufacture than the M240L currently in use by the US Army. This reduction in weight and production expenses was achieved by substituting the riveted receiver of the M240 with a lighter counterpart, crafted in two separate pieces that are subsequently welded together. Additionally, the M240 LW boasts 59 fewer
components compared to the standard M240.
