Kalashnikov unveiled its 5.45x39mm RPK-16 light support weapon at the Army 2016 exhibition. Intended to supersede the RPK-74 light machine gun, the RPK-16 can be equipped with a 30-round box magazine or a 96-round drum. It is available with both a 370mm- and 550mm-long barrel and can be fitted with a suppressor. Although Kalashnikov announced in February 2018 that it had received an initial production order from the Russian MoD for an undisclosed number of weapons, state testing reportedly revealed several flaws
with the weapon. This led Kalashnikov to develop the new RPL-20 light machine gun.
