Following identified issues during testing of the RPK-16 light machine gun, Kalashnikov initiated the development of the RPL-20 light machine gun to align with the revised requirements of the Russian military. The RPL-20 is designed to utilize 5.45x39mm cartridges and employs a belt-fed system instead of a magazine-fed one. Featuring a folding and collapsible stock reminiscent of the redesigned AK-12 and AK-19 assault rifles, the RPL-20 allows for enhanced adaptability. The gun supports two different barrel

lengths, facilitating a quick-change barrel mechanism for efficient swaps. With the shorter barrel, the RPL-20 weighs 5.2kg, while the longer barrel configuration brings its weight to 5.5kg.
